Fault Tolerant Infrastructure

Q9 designs, builds and operates its own systems for continuous power and cooling distribution within its data centres. These systems are engineered to operate each data centre at 100% capacity with at least N+1 redundancy. Through Q9's capacity reservation system, a dedicated portion of the capacity of these systems is reserved for each customer.

Q9's power generation plants are an integral part of each data centre. Connections to public utility power provide an economic alternative to running onsite power generators on a continuous basis. During a public utility outage, Q9 power systems manage the automatic switch-over from public utility power to Q9 generated power. Uninterruptible power systems condition power from the public utility system and Q9 power generators to protect customer equipment.

Onsite fuel storage systems provide fuel for Q9 power generators. On-line refuelling systems ensure generators can run indefinitely in the event of extended outages of public utility power.

Cooling systems are engineered to meet the demands of modern high-density computer hardware. Air handling systems constantly monitor and adjust temperature and humidity to ensure maximum air quality and effective cooling for customer equipment.

Given the critical nature of Q9 and customer operations, multi-stage fire control systems are located throughout the data centres in both the raised floor customer areas and restricted operational areas.

Customer Equipment Areas

Q9 data centres have been specifically designed to maximize the security and availability of mission critical computing environments. Q9's multi-level security model includes round-the-clock security guards, extensive video surveillance and biometric authentication.

Data centre entrances are equipped with biometric access controls to ensure that only authorized Q9 and customer personnel can enter each data centre. Movement of equipment and personnel is monitored at all times and strictly controlled, both coming into and out of each data centre.

A complex video surveillance network covers each facility. All movement is actively monitored by Q9 security and archived for future reference.

Co-location cabinets and custom-built cages provide secure, dedicated environments for customers within each data centre. Redundant power distribution ensures that customer equipment has access to at least two independent power sources.

Pre-engineered cable plants allow for rapidly deployed cross connects between customer environments and/or external links to outside carriers.

Data centres are monitored and supported 7 x 24 by the Q9 control centres and onsite security and technical teams. In short, each Q9 customer receives their own fully dedicated, secure data centre within a larger Q9 data centre.
